ನಾನು ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತ ದೊಡ್ಡವನಾದವನು. ಪ್ರತಿನಿತ್ಯ ಸಂಜೆ 8 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕೂರುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಯಮವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ರೇಡಿಯೋದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಹಿಂದಿ ಸರ್ವೀಸ್‌ನ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆ ಕೇಳುವುದು ನಿಯಮಿತವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಓಂಕಾರನಾಥ್ ಶ್ರೀವಾಸ್ತವ್ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ರತ್ನಾಕರ್ ಭಾರತೀಯ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಹಾಗೂ ದೆಹಲಿಯಿಂದ ಮಾರ್ಕ್ ಟಲಿ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ರಾಜಸ್ಥಾನದ ಒಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಗಡಿಭಾಗದ ನಗರವಾದ ಶ್ರೀಗಂಗಾನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಸವಿದ್ದರೂ ವರ್ಷಗಟ್ಟಳೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಂಜೆ ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ದೇಶ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಶ್ವದಿಂದ ಕಳಚಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಅನ್ನಿಸಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತ ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ರೂಪಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ಕಲಿತೆ, ಅದು ವಿಯೆಟ್ನಾಂ ಯುದ್ಧವಾಗಿರಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಬಾಂಗ್ಲಾದೇಶವಾಗಿರಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ವಾಟರ್‌ಗೇಟ್ ಹಗರಣವಾಗಿರಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಜಯಪ್ರಕಾಶ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಅವರ ಆಂದೋಲನವಾಗಿರಲಿ.
ನನಗಿನ್ನೂ ನೆನಪಿದೆ, ತುರ್ತು ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಅಂಧಕಾರದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಸುದ್ದಿಯು ಸತ್ಯದ ಏಕಮೇವ ಬೆಳಕಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆಕಾಶವಾಣಿಯು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ಅಂಶಗಳ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಸಫಲತೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸರಕಾರದ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿಯ ಎದುರಿಗೆ ಮಲಗಿಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದವು. ತುರ್ತುಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ವಿರೋಧದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇಶ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಏನಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಏನು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಕೇವಲ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯಿಂದ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಸ್ವಾಭಾವಿಕವಾಗಿಯೇ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ಈ ಪಾತ್ರದಿಂದ ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಸರಕಾರವು ವಿಚಲಿತವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಒಂದಲ್ಲ ಎರಡು ಸಲ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಗೆ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಬಂಧ ಹೇರಿದ್ದರು. ಮಾರ್ಕ್ ಟುಲಿಯನ್ನು ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಹೊರಹಾಕಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಧ್ವನಿ ತರಂಗಗಳಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿಗೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿಯ ಸೋಲಿನ ಸುದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ಅದೇ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ತಲುಪಿಸಿತು. 1977ರ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳ ಮತ ಎಣಿಕೆ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದಿನದಂದು ಸಂಜೆಗೆ ಆಕಾಶವಾಣಿಯು ಕೇವಲ ಆಂಧ್ರಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್‌ನ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವರದಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಇಡೀ ಉತ್ತರ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಸೋಲುತ್ತಿದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸ್ವತಃ ಸಂಜಯ್ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಕೂಡ ತಮ್ಮ ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿನ್ನಡೆ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಮೊಟ್ಟ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಿತು. ಆಪರೇಷನ್ ಬ್ಲೂ ಸ್ಟಾರ್‌ನ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯೇ ದೇಶದ ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟಿತು. ವಿಧಿಯ ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯ ನೋಡಿ, ಅದೇ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿಯ ಸಾವಿನ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ಸೂಚನೆಯನ್ನು ಮೊತ್ತ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ನೀಡಿತು.
ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಲಂಡನ್‌ನಿಂದ ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಎಂದೂ ವಿದೇಶಿ ವಾಸನೆ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ರಾಜಕೀಯದ ಹಗ್ಗಜಗ್ಗಾಟ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಶ್ಚಾತ್ಯ ದೇಶಗಳ ಕರಾಳ ಕೆಲಸಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಭಾರತೀಯ ರಾಜಕೀಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಗುವಷ್ಟೇ ಮುಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ಚರ್ಚೆ ಆ ಸುದ್ದಿವಾಹಿನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಕೇವಲ ನಗರದ ಬುದ್ಧಿಜೀವಿಗಳಲ್ಲದೇ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸತ್ಯದ ಮಾನದಂಡ ಎಂದು ಅದನ್ನು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ಇಂದಿನ ಟಿವಿ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯತೆ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಆದರೆ ಇಡೀ ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದರ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ ಹಾಗೇ ಉಳಿದುಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಒಂದು ಬಾರಿಯಲ್ಲ ಅನೇಕ ಬಾರಿ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ಬ್ರಿಟನ್‌ನ ಆಡಳಿತಾರೂಢ ಪಕ್ಷ, ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಸರಕಾರ ಹಾಗೂ ಬ್ರಿಟಿನ್‌ನ ಹಿತಾಸಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬದಿಗೆ ತಳ್ಳುತ್ತ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಸುದ್ದಿಗಳನ್ನು ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಬ್ರಿಟನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಜೆಂಟೀನಾ ನಡುವೆ ಆದ ಫಾಕ್‌ಲ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಸೈನ್ಯದ ಪರ ವಹಿಸಲು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿತು ಹಾಗೂ ಬ್ರಿಟನ್ ಸಂಸತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ ದೇಶದ್ರೋಹದ ಆರೋಪ ಹೊರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರು ಅನೇಕ ಸಲ ಬ್ರಿಟನ್‌ನ ಪ್ರಧಾನಮಂತ್ರಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬಹಿರಂಗವಾಗಿ ಅಸಮ್ಮತಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ ಕಾಯ್ದುಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.
ಹೇಗೆ ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿಯು ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೈ ಹಾಕಿದ್ದಾರೋ, ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ಇಂದು ಮೋದಿ ಸರಕಾರವು ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ನಡೆಸಿದೆ. ಇನ್‌ಕಂಟ್ಯಾಕ್ಸ್ ನಿಯಮಗಳ ಉಲ್ಲಂಘನೆಯ ನೆಪ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ದೆಹಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂಬಯಿಯ ಕಚೇರಿಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ದಾಳಿ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಕಾರಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಂಡರು, ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರ ಫೋನ್ ಬಂದ್ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು, ಅವರ ಲ್ಯಾಪ್‌ಟಾಪ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್‌ಗಳ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಸರಕಾರಿ ವಕ್ತಾರರು ತುಂಬಾ ಮುಗ್ಧತೆಯಿಂದ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ’ರೇಡ್ ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ, ಕೇವಲ ಅವರ ’ಸರ್ವೆ/ಸಮೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು. ಆದರೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆಂದರೆ ಮೋದಿ ಸರಕಾರವು ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಮೇಲೆ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು. ಪ್ರಧಾನಮಂತ್ರಿಗೆ ಇರುವ ಸಿಟ್ಟೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ಕಳೆದ ತಿಂಗಳು ಗುಜರಾತಿನ 2002ರ ದಂಗೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಸಲ್ಮಾನರ ಮಾರಣಹೋಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಂದು ಡಾಕ್ಯುಮೆಂಟರಿ ತೋರಿಸಿತ್ತು, ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಿನ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ನರೇಂದ್ರ ಮೋದಿಯ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಪ್ರೆಸ್ ಕ್ಲಬ್ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಪಾದಕರ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಾದ ಎಡಿಟರ್‍ಸ್ ಗಿಲ್ಡ್ ಒಳಗೊಂಡಂತೆ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳು ಬಿಬಿಸಿ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಾಡಲಾದ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ದೇಶದ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮದ ಕತ್ತು ಹಿಸುಕುವ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿವೆ. ಜಗತ್ತಿನೆಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳು ಈ ಘಟನೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ ಮಾಡಿ, ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಇಲ್ಲವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಕಳವಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿವೆ. ನರೇಂದ್ರ ಮೋದಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಮೇಲೆ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರದ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತದ ಸೂಚ್ಯಂಕವು 130ರಿಂದ ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿದು 152ಕ್ಕೆ ಕುಸಿದಿದೆ.

As reportedly commented earlier by Modi himself,i was also a firm believer of BBC, especially in those days of radio; later on to the visual.i believed that whatever comes out of BBC was authentic.it was a considerable time long back that I heard a story from BBC which I was very familiar with and found to my utter shock that the report was utterly biased and far from the truth.unfortunately, i do not recall the item except that it pertained to a major event relating to the country.since then,i very rarely listen to that channel.Great to talk about freedom of the press etc,etc , the autonomy and great privilege the channel enjoys in uk ; and that it frequently criticises the government of that country.Considerimg the independent,strong political stand taken by India on the russian front, the desperate attempt made by the opposition to target the lndian govt, the rising fiscal position etc ; timing casts a heavy sinister motive on the report .
